How many times in the world of self-help or therapy have you heard “doing that gives away your power”?
The phrase came to mind again this morning, and it got me wondering, why on earth do we do that? Why do I do that? Over and over and over again I’ve done it with a smile.
Thinking about it, one of the most common quotes in the world came to mind – “With great power, comes great responsibility”.
Isn’t that the truth!
If we accept that we have the power over our happiness and our lives, then we have responsibility for it all!
Oh no, nope, that sounds like a lot, no thank you, you take the wheel. You are now in charge of my happiness.
It’s the easy path.
So when things blow up and crumble, as they ALWAYS will when we hand our happiness to someone else, we get to just sit back and be sure it’s not our fault.
“I would be happy right now if only Chris was nice to me.”
“I would be happy right now if only Tony had loved me the same way I loved him.”
We hand our power over voluntarily because it is so very scary to think that we alone are responsible for our happiness. You actually have to do it all on your own.
No one can ever really make you happy, only you can make you happy.
We can hand away the power all we want, it will ALWAYS come back to us because it was always in our hands to begin with.
Scary or freeing? YES.
